The Lightning High School Hockey League’s first ever Jamboree event officially came to a close at Florida Hospital Center Ice, after 17 games were played to open up the league’s 2017-2018 season. Let’s take a look at the recap notes for the second edition of the LHSHL Podcast.

JESUIT-MITCHELL

The Jesuit Tigers took down the two-time defending LHSHL Champion Mitchell Mustangs with an impressive 4-1 victory on Sunday morning. Senior netminder Paul Coats shut the door on Mitchell, while earning his first victory of the season for the Tigers. Additionally, Jesuit’s Kyle Repar made a loud entrance to start his senior season, as number 17 posted a hat trick.

DURANT-BLOOMINGDALE

What a way to kick off Durant’s return to High School Hockey, as the Cougars defeated the Bloomingdale Ice Bulls 8-4, yesterday. After an exciting game from puck drop, both teams combined for five first period goals, but Durant found the back of the net four times in the second period; and then outscored the Bulls 2-1 in the third period to officially earn the team’s first win under head coach Todd Comunale.

Durant's Jordan Putnam, had four goals to lead the way for the Cougars; and sophomore goaltender Dillon Garasz earned the win for Durant in net, while holding last season’s league leading goal scorer, Andrew Miranda, to just one goal. Also, making their way onto the score sheet -- Daniel Schilling chipped in two goals and Aiden Kennedy recorded three helpers for Durant.

GEORGE JENKINS-MITCHELL

The George Jenkins Eagles and Mitchell Mustangs went head-to-head in a back and forth game, that saw a dramatic comeback victory (5-4) from the former LHSHL Champions.

Jenkins led 3-1 heading into the third period, but Mitchell completed the comeback while outscoring the Eagles 4-1 in the third period. Additionally, Mitchell freshman Tim Ruf scored his first LHSHL goal, which was the game-winning goal and it came with 1:39 left in the contest.

PALM HARBOR-RIVER RIDGE

The River Ridge Knights earned their second victory on the day, and by defeating the Palm Harbor Hurricanes by a final score of 6-3. River Ridge capitalized on the power play three times, which ultimately appeared to be the difference maker.

The Knights' Dylan Hultberg led River Ridge with four points in the contest (1goal-3 assists), and his only goal would stand as the game winner.

WEST MANATEE-WIREGRASS

This matchup was nice bounce-back game for West Manatee, as the team suffered a loss in the team’s first ever LHSHL game earlier in the day. West Manatee earned its first ever point in the standings, after tying Wiregrass 7-7 and in dramatic fashion.

The two teams combined for seven goals in the third period, but the game’s final two goals were the biggest, though. West Manatee Sophomore Máté Imre scored a shorthanded goal to get West Manatee within one late in the third, and then again shortly after he capitalized on the power play to complete the comeback.

FREEDOM-NEWSOME

Freedom was victorious in the league’s opening game for the 2017-2018 season, as the Patriots won by a final score of 5-1 over a shorthanded Newsome Wolves squad. Freedom's Jacob Sanders earned the win between the pipes for the Patriots.

Additionally, Freedom's senior Aiden Carney recorded a hat trick, while teammates Jared Johnston and Jacob Karch chipped in the other two goals for the Pats.

PALM HARBOR-BERKELEY

Duncan Willis earned the shutout for Palm Harbor in net, while the team scored three first period goals and then closed the door in the third to score three more times (6-0 victory). The goal scorers for the Hurricanes were Garrett Toenjes (2 goals), Caden Watson, John Alexander D'Agostino and Santiago Barrios each chipped in a goal for the Canes too.
