All Star Game

Monday, January 2nd

West 6, East 5

Amalie Arena hosted the best of the best of the Lightning High School Hockey League with the 2023 LHSHL All Star Game, presented by Honda.

The West All Stars took home bragging rights with a tight 6-5 win over the East All Stars, with Steinbrenner’s Ari Blatt scoring two goals. Blatt was named the game’s first star, while East Lake’s Kyran Stahlke pitched in three assists for the West.

The game opened with a bang as the two teams exchanged 5 combined goals in the first five minutes. Cole Parkhurst (Newsome Wolves) scored the game’s opening goal for the East. Hayden Hutner (River Ridge) followed that with another tally for the East to make it 2-0.

The two teams would exchange three more goals in those first five minutes, with Ethan Carstens (Durant) scoring for the East and Sean Murphy (Plant) and Ben Grossman (Steinbrenner) scoring for the West.

Trailing 3-2 in the second period, the West scored three times to take a big lead. Blatt scored his two goals, while Kane Eanes (Mitchell) added one as well. Nick Macri (Riverview) scored the lone goal in the second period for the East, making it a 5-4 game.

The West was able to hold onto their lead in the third, adding an insurance goal from Connor Mahoney (Palmetto) to hold off a third period rally from the East. Tyler Hoffberg (Riverview) scored a goal in the third for the East.

Varsity

Friday, January 6th

Plant 7, Seminole 1

Recap: A three goal first period led Plant to a big divisional win over Seminole, 7-1 on Friday night. Cayden Hardie had a goal and two assists for the Panthers, while Pierce Stout and Trey Rodriguez each had a goal and an assist. Charles Abel made 10 stops in the win for Plant. Logan Marks scored the lone goal for Seminole.

Records: Plant 12-6-1, Seminole 7-10-1

East Lake 6, Durant 1

Recap: A three goal third period helped East Lake close out Durant 6-1 on Friday, ending Durant’s undefeated season. Kyran Stahlke had four points for East Lake, including two goals, while Benjamin Gentry added a goal and two assists. Connor Sheridan made 24 saves for the Eagles. Ryan Putnam made 40 stops for Durant.

Records: East Lake 15-1-3, Durant 16-1-2

Freedom 3, Land O’ Lakes 3

Recap: Jack Budd’s third period goal tied the game at three for Land O’ Lakes against Freedom, with the game ending in a 3-3 tie. The two teams each held leads at some point in the game, but couldn’t find the tie-breaking goal. Maxwell Ratliff had a goal and an assist for Freedom, while Jason Abdullah had two assists for Land O’ Lakes.

Records: Freedom 6-9-4, Land O’ Lakes 13-5-1

Palm Harbor 5, Riverview 5

Recap: Palm Harbor came back from two separate two-goal deficits to tie Riverview 5-5 on Friday. Nick Macri had four goals and an assist for Riverview, who led 3-0 and 5-2 at different points in the game. Ben Reimer had a goal and three assists for Palm Harbor, while Jan Zeman scored twice and added an assist.

Records: Palm Harbor 12-6-2, Riverview 11-6-2

Newsome Wolverines 6, Bloomingdale 4

Recap: Newsome held off a furious third-period rally to win 6-4 over Bloomingdale. The Wolverines scored the game’s first four goals, as Kaine Otterbacher scored twice and Ethan Jones made 40 saves. Bloomingdale scored four times in the third behind Aiden Locicero’s three points.

Manatee 2, Jenkins 1

Recap: Two goals in the second period guided Manatee to a 2-1 comeback win over Jenkins. Nicholas Kelly and Colton Segneri each scored for the Admirals, while Braedyn Sullivan stopped 23 shots. Riley Behen made 22 saves for Jenkins.

Records: Manatee 9-7-2, Jenkins 6-11-1

Palmetto 4, Steinbrenner 2

Recap: A big night from Ethan Fischer guided Palmetto to a 4-2 win over Steinbrenner on Friday. Fischer made 42 saves on 44 shots, including 17 saves in a perfect first period. Connor Mahoney brought the offense for Palmetto with three goals, while James Gelvin had two assists. Benjamin Grossman and Dylan Hineman scored for Steinbrenner.

Records: Palmetto 9-6-1, Steinbrenner 11-6-2

Wiregrass 2, Jesuit 0

Recap: A goaltending duel ended 2-0 for Wiregrass over Jesuit on Friday night. Erik Williams stopped all 26 shots he faced for the shutout to guide Wiregrass, while Sean Campbell scored the game-winning goal late in the third period. Gregory Politis made 30 saves on 31 shots for Jesuit.

Records: Wiregrass 10-7-1, Jesuit 11-5-1

Mitchell 4, River Ridge 3

Recap: Mitchell came back from three one-goal deficits to take home a 4-3 win over River Ridge on Friday. Yiorgos Bikakis had two goals and an assist for the Mustangs, while Edward Kotula made 29 saves. Adam Roberts had two assists for River Ridge.

Records: Mitchell 10-6-2, River Ridge 6-13-0

Newsome Wolves 11, Tampa Catholic 0

Recap: Landon Alride’s hat trick led Newsome to an 11-0 win over Tampa Catholic. Eric Nitzschke and Colin Jackson each had two goals and an assist, while Dylan Dykstra stopped every shot he faced for the shutout. Jacob Fisch made 41 saves for Tampa Catholic.

Saturday, January 7th

Manatee 3, Seminole 0

Recap: Braedyn Sullivan continued a strong weekend for Manatee with a shutout in a 3-0 win over Seminole. Sullivan stopped 22 shots for the shutout, including all 13 shots he faced in the third period. John Moschella added two assists for Manatee. William Bellin made 29 saves for Seminole.

Records: Manatee 9-7-2, Seminole 7-10-1

Friday, January 6th

Land O’ Lakes JV 9, River Ridge JV 0
- Owen Vachon and Drake Munroe each had five points in a 9-0 win for Land O’ Lakes JV.
Newsome JV 3, Seminole/East Lake JV 1
- Ryan Dube scored the game-winning goal for Newsome JV in a 3-1 win.
Wiregrass JV 6, Durant/Jenkins JV 2
- Savir Mohammed had two goals and an assist to lead Wiregrass JV to a 6-2 win.
Manatee/Palmetto JV 8, Bloomingdale/Riverview JV 3
- Adler Mcnesby scored four goals in an 8-3 win for Manatee/Palmetto JV.

Saturday, January 7th

Steinbrenner JV 3, Durant/Jenkins JV 1
- Maddox Fox had two points in a 3-1 win for Steinbrenner JV.
Freedom/Leto JV 4, Mitchell JV 2
- Jack Speciale had a goal and two assists for Freedom/Leto JV in a 4-2 win.
Land O’ Lakes JV 11, Palm Harbor JV 1
- Four different skaters posted three points in an 11-1 win for Land O’ Lakes JV.

Sunday, January 8th

River Ridge JV 5, Mitchell JV 0
- Blake Mack stopped 15 shots for the shutout in a 5-0 win for River Ridge JV.
Land O’ Lakes JV 5, Steinbrenner JV 3
- Drake Munroe had two goals and an assist for Land O’ Lake JV in a 5-3 win.
River Ridge JV 2, Durant/Jenkins JV 2
- Blake Mack made 18 saves for River Ridge JV, while Mason Cessna stopped 19 shots for Durant/Jenkins JV in a 2-2 tie.
Seminole/East Lake JV 6, Mitchell JV 1
- Alex Pitts and Ryan Garbus each scored twice in a 6-1 win for Seminole/East Lake JV.
