TAMPA BAY -- The Lightning High School Hockey League (LHSHL) today announced that it is accepting applications for its Rob Schmitz Memorial Scholarship Award through February 18th, 2018.
The Rob Schmitz Scholarship is available to High School senior students who will be enrolled as a full time college student in the upcoming academic year, are active members on a LHSHL roster and possess a minimum grade-point-average (GPA) of 2.0. The winning applicant shall be chosen for their community service, leadership qualities, sense of humor and hockey skill.
Additionally, the scholarship will be paid to a college of the awardee’s choice in the amount range of $500-$1,000 for their first year of college. All applications, required documents and attachments can be mailed to Rob Schmitz Scholarship c/o 12960 N Dale Mabry Hwy., Tampa, FL., 33618.
Doctor Robert Schmitz was an avid youth, High School and Lightning hockey fan who was struck down in the prime of his life and passed away July 26, 2010 at the age of 47. “Rob” as he was fondly called by friends and family played football at Virginia Tech and graduated. Cum Laude with a degree in Biochemistry. He received his medical degree from Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and received his medical degree in 1990. He was a career Air Force physician in Radiology and retired as a Colonel in 2008.
