The Lightning High School Hockey League Podcast recaps all eight of Week Three's games, and takes a closer look at the Jesuit-Wiregrass matchup, which was the LHSHL Game Of The Week.
The River Ridge Knights entered their contest against the Freedom Patriots with an undefeated 4-0 record, however the Pats had a thing or two to say about that. Owen Barno led the way for Freedom, as the youngster recorded a hat trick and Freedom won its second game of the season (5-2).
An old rivalry matchup took to the ice down in Ellenton and between the Mitchell Mustangs and East Manatee Admirals. It appears that there’s no stopping East Manatee, as the Admirals defeated the Mustangs by a final score of 9-0. East Manatee senior forward Patrick Kenefick recorded a hat trick to help the Admirals improve their record to 5-0 – with 48 Goals For, on the year.
The Palm Harbor Hurricanes played their second game of Week Three this past Friday, and rebounded from the team’s tough loss to Seminole (last Wednesday). Garret Toenjes continues to shine for Palm Harbor, as the forward posted a natural hat trick against the Durant Cougars. The out-of-division teams battled to a 3-3 tie, and both find themselves sitting in second place for their respective Divisions.
Both the Berekeley Prep Buccaneers and Plant Panthers entered this contest winless, but the Panthers were the team that came out of the matchup victorious. Plant defeated Berkeley by a final score of 11-0, and goaltender Troy Burkhart posted his first shutout for the 2017-2018 campaign.
EAST LAKE-WEST MANATEE
The East Lake Eagles continue to fly high, as the Blue and White defeated West Manatee 8-2. The Eagles are now 5-0 and sit atop of the Bradley Division. East Lake had a few players with multi-point nights, which also included Benjamin Lacey and Demetri Samarkos.
Forward Dayton Collins recorded a hat trick to lead the Newsome Wolves to their first victory this season, after the club took down the Steinbrenner Warriors by a final score of 5-1.
The Seminole Sharks and Bloomingdale Ice Bulls faced-off in a memorable matchup at the Brandon Ice Sports Forum. The Sharks and Ice Bulls tied 4-4, and Bloomingdale’s captain, Andrew Miranda, had a break game; as he recorded his first hat trick of the season. On the other hand, Seminole had four different players find the back of the net.
Game Of The Week
Wiregrass and Jesuit did not disappoint for the LHSHL’s second Game Of The Week for 2017-2018. Wiregrass stunned the undefeated Tigers and defeated them by a final score of 8-4. Ice Hawks forward Joseph Davis had a six-point night, and the team’s netminder, Carson Saunders, made over 40 saves to help Wiregrass to its second win on the year.
